The Traditional Natural Dyeing Method

Why Gambiered Canton Gauze is Black on Top and Brown Underneath?

Gambiered Canton Gauze is known for its distinctive "black surface, brown back" appearance and unique leather-like texture. Both qualities come from its centuries-old, nature-based dyeing process.

▍ The Origin of “Black Top, Brown Back”
During the traditional dyeing method, the silk is repeatedly soaked in juice of the yam plant (Dioscorea cirrhosa), which gives the fabric a rich reddish-brown hue.
After multiple rounds of sun-drying, artisans apply fine Pearl River mud to one side of the fabric. The natural tannins in the yam juice react with iron-rich mud under the sun, turning the surface into a deep, lasting black – while the uncoated back retains the original reddish-brown tone.

▍ The Secret of Its Leather-Like Feel
The same mud-coating process forms a thin, breathable film on the silk fibers, giving it a subtle stiffness and resilience. Over time and with wear, this layer softens naturally but maintains its structure – resulting in a drape and hand-feel reminiscent of fine leather, yet remaining lightweight and breathable.

▍ More Than Just a Look
This two-toned, textured effect isn't just aesthetic – it's proof of a handmade, sun-and-soil ritual that can't be rushed or replicated by machines. Each piece carries the subtle variations of nature, making it truly one-of-a-kind. Such texture can only be achieved by natural fibers, beyond the reach of both machines and synthetic materials.
